Candy Wrapper Purse Tutorial

Candy Wrapper Purse Tutorial thumbnail
Save your candy wrappers for a purse.

Recycling has become the norm for many people. One form of recycling has even become a fashion statement: the candy wrapper purse. Although many people weave candy wrappers to make a purse, a decoupage project is easier to do for beginners. Not only does it create something new from an old object, it recycles items that otherwise would have been thrown away. The purse is very easy to complete and can be a great project for children. The fun part of this recycling project? Eating the candy to get the wrappers.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an old or outdated purse.

    • 2

Lay the candy wrappers face down on a piece of old plastic or newspaper to protect the work surface.

    • 3

Lightly coat the backs of the wrappers with the decoupage glue.

    • 4

Cover the purse front, back, sides and bottom with the wrappers. Do not cover the zipper. If a hook is available, hang the purse so that sticky parts don't stick to anything. Otherwise, glue the wrappers in stages in order to allow proper drying time. Cover the front and sides first, and let dry. Then cover the bottom and set aside. After that, cover the back.

    • 5

Cut the wrappers if needed to fit around snaps and other décor.

    • 6

Cover the handles of the purse either by cutting a wrapper to fit it or by wrapping around the handle in a spiral for a different look.

    • 7

Use more decoupage glue over the wrappers once they are stuck to the purse. This will give it added strength. Hang the purse on a hook or glue the parts of the purse in stages.

    • 8

Let the purse dry completely and then spray on an acrylic sealer to help protect it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of a purse, take reusable shopping bags and decorate them with candy wrappers, chip bags or magazine pictures.
