Instructions

1. Locate the food stamp office. While the headquarters may be in Nashville, most cities and towns have local branches. Call 866-311-4287 or visit the state's website to gain more information about the location of the Rutherford County food stamp office, which the Tennessee Department of Human Services administers. You can also apply at your local Social Security office.

2. Gather the paperwork that you'll need. This often includes pay stubs or proof of income, a lease showing who lives with you and for whom you'll receive benefits, rent receipts, utility bills, medical bills and proof of identity. This can be a state or government ID.

3. Set up an appointment with a case worker. She will review your paperwork and determine whether you qualify. If you qualify, she'll let you know when you can begin receiving benefits.

4. Typically, you must re-qualify every six months for food stamps. Set up an appointment with your case worker before your case must be re-evaluated. Make sure you get to your appointment on time.
