How to Calculate Tire Air Pressure by Vehicle Weight thumbnail
Tire pressure is important for long-lasting tires.

Maintaining proper tire pressure in your tires is important to the performance and handling of your vehicle. Improper tire inflation reduces tire wear and eventually causes tire failure. Gas mileage can also be improved when your tires are inflated properly. Although many newer tires have inflation recommendations, you can calculate the required tire pressure for your specific vehicle by weight, using a calculator.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the driver's door of your automobile and locate the sticker on the door jamb.

    • 2

On the sticker locate the weight of your particular vehicle.

    • 3

Type the weight of your vehicle into a calculator and divide that number by 100. The resulting number (or quotient) is the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle. It is recommended that the tire pressure be within 4 pounds of this figure.
