How to Sync Microsoft Outlook With an MSN Email Account

Merging Hotmail and Outlook only takes a few minutes.

Windows Live Hotmail, formerly known as MSN Hotmail, is a Web-based email client created by Microsoft. Outlook is a stand-alone email client also created by Microsoft. According to Microsoft, both free and paid Hotmail users can easily merge their accounts with Outlook. Doing so allows Microsoft Outlook to users to read, send and control their Hotmail emails through Outlook. Unlike merging Outlook with some other online email clients, merging with Hotmail requires you to download an Outlook extension called the "Outlook Connector."

Instructions

Download and Install the Outlook Extender

1. Turn on your computer and wait for the operating system to load. If you have Outlook set to automatically start with your computer, close Outlook.

2. Open an Internet browser and navigate to Microsoft's Outlook Connector download page (see the "Resources" section of this article). Click "Download" and, when prompted, choose to open the file instead of saving it, then click "Run." Depending on your browser and operating system, you may get a warning message during the download, but continue anyway as the program isn't harmful.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions in the setup wizard to complete the Outlook Connector installation.

Merging Hotmail with Outlook

1. Exit the setup wizard when Outlook Connector is finished installing. Start Microsoft Outlook and you'll see a message asking you to configure the Outlook Connector.

2. Enter your email address, the password that goes with that email address and your name. The name field denotes what people will see under the "From" category in their email account. Click "OK" to complete the setup.

3. Wait for Outlook to configure and load. Upon loading look in the "Navigation" pane on the left of the window, you'll now see your Hotmail account and be able to send and receive emails to that account through Outlook.

Tips & Warnings

• You can add an additional Hotmail account by opening the "Outlook Connector" menu, clicking "Add a New Account" and entering the requested information.

• You can remove a Hotmail account by clicking the "E-mail" tab, highlighting the account you'd like to remove and clicking "Remove" then "Yes."
