How to Sync a Non-Apple to iTunes
Apple launched its iTunes program in 2001, shortly before it released the first iPod. Though people had already been downloading music, mostly illegally, for a few years, iTunes gave consumers a way to download music legally for a reasonable price. On iTunes, songs cost 99 cents albums cost $10--cheaper than the cost of most CDs at the time. In 2003, Apple launched a version of iTunes that was compatible with PCs, which enabled the company to sell iPods to both Mac and PC users. Today, syncing non-Apple computers with iTunes continues to be a simple process.

Go to the iTunes website (www.itunes.com).

Download iTunes by clicking the big "download iTunes" button, then click "Download Now." In the "File Downloading" window that opens, click "Run." Your computer will download the iTunes software; click "Run" again when prompted. The installer window will open. Click "next," agree to the terms and conditions, click "next," then click "install." The installation will likely take several minutes. When the installation is finished, you will see a message that says, "Congratulations. iTunes has been successfully installed on your computer." Click "Finish."

Launch iTunes from your computer's program files. Agree to the terms and conditions for using the software (you only need to do this the first time you launch iTunes). Once in the iTunes program, click the "File" menu and then click "Add Folder to Library" to import music saved in your computer folders into iTunes. To import music from a CD, insert the CD into your computer and iTunes will prompt you to import the songs from the CD.

Tips & Warnings
iTunes and the accompanying music library might take up much of your hard drive space; the bigger the music library, the more space it takes up. Consider an external hard drive for file storage and back-up; in case your hard drive crashes, this ensures your music is still backed up on the external hard drive.
You can sync your iPod with your iTunes library to take your music with you on your iPod. To do so, just open iTunes, plug in your iPod using the USB cord that came with it, and follow the prompts to sync.
