Installing a wireless router lets everyone in the home or office roam wirelessly with their computers, gaming equipment and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices. However, it also lets everyone within proximity of the wireless connection do the same thing. Additional users on your wireless network can hack into your computer or cause the network to slow down. Setting up Belkin router security prevents unwanted users from accessing your wireless network.

      Tether the router to a computer by connecting an Ethernet cable to one of the WAN ports on the router, then to the Ethernet port located on the computer. A tethered connection allows access to the Belkin's router settings, called the Graphic User Interface (GUI).

      Open a web browser and enter http://192.168.2.1 into the web address (URL) field on the browser. Load the page by pressing "Enter" or "Return" on the computer keyboard.

      Click on the "login" hyperlink at the top of the GUI home page. By default, Belkin routers do not have a password. Leave the password field blank and click on the "Submit" link to enter the GUI interface.

      Click on the "Security" hyperlink located under the "Wireless" menu.

      Select 64Bit WEP or 128Bit WEP. If you are not sure which one works best with your wireless network, use 64Bit. All equipment on your network will connect to 64Bit security.

      Select, "Key1" and enter in your new password. Click on the "Apply" hyperlink to save the router settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • The password must have numbers and letters in it. Belkin allows passwords up to 10 characters long.
