How to Repair Wetsuits

Neoprene wetsuits can keep surfers warm.

Wetsuits are made of neoprene, a synthetic rubber that provides complete insulation and water resistance for the person wearing the wetsuit. The suits do not rip easily, but they might tear if they are caught on sharp objects such as rocks and other formations under water. Make the repair yourself instead of buying a new suit or having someone else repair the suit for you.

Things You'll Need

• Rubbing alcohol
• Cotton swabs
• Soft cloths
• Brush (short-bristled)
• Neoprene cement
• Weights

Instructions

1. Clean the torn area with rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs. Rub the wetsuit with the alcohol to remove any stuck on dirt and wax buildup.

2. Dry the wetsuit with a soft cloth.

3. Apply neoprene cement to the torn edges using the short-bristled brush.

4. Pull the torn edges together, pressing them into each other along the line where they ripped, and hold them in place.

5. Lay a weight over the cemented area to help the cement bond without the torn edges slipping. Allow the cement to harden for about five minutes, apply more cement and repeat the process if needed.
