Homemade fragrance lamp oil is quick to make.

If you have an oil-burning lamp, there is no need to go out and buy oil to fuel it. You can make your own fragrant lamp oil right at home. Homemade fragrance lamp oil is inexpensive and quick to make. It will burn just as effectively as store-bought lamp oil for a fraction of the cost. Take care to use the right ingredients and measurements so you don't damage the lamp or cause excessive smoking.

Things You'll Need

    • 1

Buy a 16 oz. bottle of 91 percent isopropyl alcohol. Do not use 70 percent rubbing alcohol for making homemade lamp oil.

    • 2

Add 10 to 12 drops of your favorite essential oil to the alcohol. Secure the lid on the bottle and shake it up well.

    • 3

Fill a bottle with 16 oz. of vegetable oil for an alternative lamp oil recipe. Add 10 to 12 drops of essential oil, and shake the bottle. You can even use already used oil such as that from deep frying. Just be sure to strain the oil well before pouring it into the bottle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid adding too much essential oil to the alcohol or vegetable oil. Excessive amounts of essential oil can cause the lamp to smoke.
