How to Find If My Network Wi-Fi Is Locked?

By Tiffany Garden

A Wi-Fi network is considered opened or locked depending on its security settings. A locked icon next to your wireless network indicates that you have set wireless security on the network. Wireless security adds two levels of security to your network. The first is that your data is encrypted as it goes over the wireless network. The second is that you set an access key for this network.

Physically check your router. Many routers have a small light on them that indicates whether or not you are using wireless security on the router. The icon would appear as a small lock on the front or side of the router.

Go to your computer. Click the wireless network icon in your system tray.

Examine the networks listed in the Wireless Network Connection section. Your network should be listed with a small padlock next to it if the security is enabled for that particular wireless network.
