How to Prepare for the Release of My Husband From Jail thumbnail
The transition from jail to society isn't always easy.

The incarceration of a spouse can take a huge toll on a marriage. Anxious wives count the days until their husbands will be released from jail or prison. Although the reunion of a husband and wife after a jail term can be exciting, the dynamics of the marriage will have changed considerably. If your husband is going to be released from jail soon, there are some things you can do to make his transition back into society a successful one.

Instructions

    • 1

Know his release conditions. You should get to know his probation or parole officer and know when he is supposed to check in with the officer. Find out if he has other restrictions or requirements, such as, a curfew or random drug testing. If you know the conditions of your husband's release, you will be better equipped to help him meet the standards and not get into trouble.

    • 2

Prepare your home. Make your home as comfortable as possible. Keep in mind, your husband has lived in a small cell for awhile, so a wide open space where he can relax will be very beneficial. Ask your landlord about adding your husband to the lease, if you live in rental property. If you live in public housing, be sure to confirm that it is agreeable for your husband to move in with a conviction on his record.

    • 3

Save money. There will be a natural increase in food, clothing, and transportation costs when your husband comes back. Be sure you have saved enough money to get you through until your husband can find work.

    • 4

Secure your husband's documents. Your husband will need his Social Security card, driver's license and birth certificate, especially when seeking employment.

    • 5

Make a resume for your husband. Your husband will eventually want to get a job, and a resume will be important.

    • 6

Get counseling. You have asserted your independence while your husband was gone. You have had to make all the decisions for you and your kids. Your husband coming back into the picture will create some strain, especially in the beginning. Talk to a counselor who can help you work through some of your feelings before your husband is released.
