How to Register a Prepaid MasterCard

You must activate your MasterCard before you can use it.

Whether you are establishing credit by using a prepaid MasterCard or you want to avoid giving out your personal banking information while purchasing items on the Internet, you will need to register your prepaid MasterCard before using it. Yes, you can certainly use the card without registering it. However, you would be working against yourself because you can't build your credit by using an anonymous card, and you aren't protecting yourself if you fail to secure the card by attaching your name to it.

Instructions

1. Read the instructions on the back of the MasterCard. Know what you will need to register the card and how you would like to register it.

2. Call the phone number listed on the card to register it. You will be asked for the card and activation numbers, as well as your name, address and phone number by a computerized voice or a representative. According to the MasterCard Web site, you will also need "government-issued identification." If you prefer to set up your account online, go to Step 3.

3. Visit the Web site listed on the back of the MasterCard and click on the "Activate Card" link. Follow the directions; you will need to enter your card number, activation code and possibly the three-digit CVC number on the back of your card. Follow the directions on the Web site to open an account by entering your name, address and phone number.
