How to Block Popup Windows
Marketers on the World Wide Web are always looking for new ways to reach potential customers and pop-up ads are a common technique that they use. However, this type of advertising is often frowned upon by Internet users because of its intrusive and distracting nature. In addition, the pop-up windows that appear on your computer waste system resources and can spawn even more pop-ups, which could result in crashing your web browser. All of the major browsers now include their own built-in pop-up blockers to give you more control of your web browsing experience.

Use Google Chrome's pop-up blocker feature. Go to Google's Chrome browser and click on the tool-shaped icon, which is usually in the far right corner below the web page tabs. Click on the "Options" sub-menu. In the new window that comes up, select the "Under the Hood" tab. Click on "Content Settings." Click on "Pop-ups" when the next window opens. This should be the second to last tab next to "Location." Click on "Do not allow any sites to show pop-ups," then click "Close" twice to finalize your settings.

Set up Internet Explorer to block pop-up ads. For Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 7 in Windows XP, open the web browser and click on the "Tools" menu on the right side of the browser window. Click on the "Pop-up blocker" option which appears immediately in the drop-down menu. If you see "Turn on pop-up blocker," click that option and pop-up windows will be blocked. If the option says "Turn off pop-up blocker," leave it alone; Internet Explorer 8 is already blocking pop-up ads.

Customize Opera's pop-up blocker feature. Opera's web browser blocks pop-ups automatically. However, if for some reason the settings have been changed to allow them, open the Menu on the upper-left side and click on "Settings." Click on "Quick Preferences" and then click the "Block All Pop-ups" option. If "Quick Preferences" doesn't have this option, click on "Settings" and go to "Preferences." After the next window comes up, click on "General" and go down to "Pop-ups" and select "Block all pop-ups" in the drop-down options box. Click "OK" to make your changes permanent and block all pop-ups.
