How to Get the Transmission of an Automatic Car Replaced

Automatic tranmissions can be costly to replace if they fail.

Automatic transmissions are convenient for driving but expensive to replace if something goes wrong. An automatic can cost anywhere from $1500 to $3000 for the transmission and installation, depending on what the make and model of the car is. Because of the relative complexity of an auto over a manual and the special tools that are required to properly rebuild an automatic transmission, automatics are often simply replaced entirely with a new (or even a used one in good shape) transmission.

Instructions

    • 1

Shop around to find out how much it will cost for the transmission as well as to have it installed by a mechanic. Automatic transmissions are relatively expensive to buy and install, so it's best to go into the process with the goal of researching how much different shops will charge and how long it will take to replace the gearbox. You might be surprised at the disparity in prices from shop to shop.

Make sure the shop you choose to replace the transmission is reputable. When you visit them or talk to them ask them how long they have been in business and make sure they are familiar with the type of vehicle you are having them work on. Also make sure they are a member of the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and are properly trained and certified.

Get the car to the shop. If your automatic has completely failed and the car is not driveable, you will have to have it towed or delivered somehow to the shop. This will usually run anywhere from $60 on up, depending on how far you are from the shop. If the transmission is slipping or not shifting or simply making strange noises, you can probably still drive it to the shop under its own power.

    • 4

Decide if it's worth it to replace the transmission or simply get another car. The high cost of buying and paying to have an automatic transmission installed may well outweigh the value of the car altogether, especially if it is a few decades old and has high mileage. Of course, you may want to fix it even it doesn't make that much sense fiscally because you like the car or for some other reason.

Make sure the vehicle is functioning and shifting properly when you get it back from the shop. Drive the car in a variety of conditions to make sure it is truly fixed. After that, make sure the new transmission is properly maintained and periodically inspected to ensure a long life.
