How to Install Phillips Surround Sound

A Phillips Surround Sound system is what is known as a "Home Theater In a Box." The system comes with the speakers needed for surround sound as well as a receiver unit that may have an integrated DVD player. The speakers normally include three front speakers and two rear speakers, as well as a subwoofer. Some Phillips Surround Sound Systems may have more speakers. Installing the surround sound requires proper speaker placement and connection to the receiver.

• Audio/Video cables

Instructions

Placing the receiver and speakers

1. Place the receiver near the television. The placement of the receiver does not matter as long as the remote control signal and the wires from the speakers can reach the receiver.

2. Place the center speaker under the center of the television.

3. Place the front speakers to the right and left of the television. Point the speakers at a 45-degree angle toward the center of the room. Each speaker is labeled as either "Front Left" or "Front Right."

4. Place the rear speakers at about ear level behind where you will sit to watch TV. These speakers should also be turned at a 45-degree angle toward the center of the room. Each speaker is labeled as either "Rear Right or "Rear Left."

5. Place the subwoofer at least one meter away from the TV, preferably in the corner of the room.

Connecting the Speakers and TV

1. Connect the wire from each speaker into the appropriate port on the back of the receiver. There are six color-coded ports on the back of the receiver. Each speaker has a color-coded connector. Match the connector color to the port color.

2. Connect a video cable from the back of the receiver to an available input on the back of the TV. The cable can be a RCA, S-Video, Component, or HDMI, in increasing order of quality. Attach the cable to the appropriate jack on the receiver. Plug the other end into a corresponding input on the TV. The TV may not have all of these connectors; use the best available connector.

3. Connect an audio cable from the back of the receiver to either the TV or other device. If you are connecting to the TV, connect the red and white RCA cables from the TV's "Audio Out" to the receivers "Audio In." If you are using another another device, such as a cable box that has an available "Digital Coaxial Out" for an audio port, connect a coaxial audio cable from the back of the device to the back of the receiver.
