How to Make Pom Poms Using Crepe Paper

How to Make Pom Poms Using Crepe Paper thumbnail
Take crepe paper for pom pom projects.

Artsy uses for crepe paper span beyond decorating for parties. Crepe paper can work in a variety of crafts such as paper flowers or paper mache projects. Crepe paper also folds into pom poms for young girls who can get a kick out of helping with the project. Instead of taking down the crepe paper decorations and throwing them away, use the paper in pom poms.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the desired color of crepe paper you want for your pom poms. You can pick one shade or use as many colors as you like.

    • 2

Unroll about 1 or 2 feet crepe paper from your first colored roll onto a table. Don't cut it off. Once your desired length has been unrolled, fold the roll back over to unroll towards the loose end. Once you reach the loose end with your roll, fold again and turn back the other way. Continue to unroll your crepe paper folding back and forth until you've got roughly 10 to 15 loosely unrolled layers. Cut the crepe paper off at the roll when you have the desired thickness of layers.

    • 3

Repeat the previous step with your other roll of crepe paper. Continue to alternate colors every 10 to 15 layers until you've got roughly 25 to 40 sets of layers. The amount of separate layers will depend on how thick you want your pom poms to be.

    • 4

Grab the exact center of all the layers of crepe paper stacked atop each other. This is where you will tie them together.

    • 5

Tape or wrap a rubberband around the center of the crepe paper layers so that you're creating two separate even ends. The center should be taped or wrapped tightly so the two ends taper out to the fullness of the crepe paper. The center is where you grip your hand when holding the pom poms. On each end, you should have looped ends of the crepe paper from when you folded the layers back and forth.

    • 6

Cut the loops on each end so that they are open ended and gently fluff out. This adds fullness to your pom poms and completes your project.
