How to Get a Business License in Birmingham AL
To conduct business in the city of Birmingham, Ala., any person or entity must get a business license. Both state and local business licenses are issued through the local county courthouse. Obtaining the correct business license in Birmingham is dependant on the type of service the business will offer. The business license is good for one calendar year and must be renewed in January each year. Application and renewal fee associated with each license depend on the type of license you need.

Fill out the Application for Tax Certificate form (ATC). All applicants for a business license must complete this form and submit it along with the correct business licensing forms.

Determine the type of license you need. Contact the Tax and License Administration at the city hall of Birmingham. You can call the office (205-254-2198), go to the office, or visit the City of Birmingham website. To apply for a general business license go to the office, 710 N. 20th St., during its regular business hours. Licensing of a controlled business such as alcoholic beverage, pool table, and dance licenses, are taken by appointment only. As of July 2010, the licensing application hours are 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.
