The Proper Way to Hit a Golf Ball

The Proper Way to Hit a Golf Ball thumbnail
The way the ball is addressed is crucial to the direction it will go.

Hitting a golf ball in the direction and for the distance you want can take years of practice. But developing a basic, repeatable setup can yield fruitful results.

Instructions

  1. Directions

    • 1

Grip the club properly. Start by gripping the club with your left hand with your thumb pointing down the grip. Then grip the club with your right hand lower down the grip. with the pinky finger of the right hand overlapping the index finger of the left. The right thumb should also be pointing down the shaft.

    • 2

Set your stance. Stand with your feet together parallel to the intended direction, about three-quarters of an arms length away from the ball. Then move your feet so that your front foot (the one closest to the intended target), is slightly ahead of the golf ball.

    • 3

Address the ball. Position the club face at 90 degrees to the intended target, behind the ball with the ball positioned on the center of the club face. Position your hands slightly ahead of the ball. This position is known as the forward press.

    • 4

Swing the club back in a straight line away from the intended target, to the top of the back swing. The club shaft should be parallel to the ground at the top of the back swing. Do not pause at the top of the back swing, but swing the club back down the same path, keeping your head down and focused on the ball. Don't cock your wrists as you make this motion because the power in the swing is caused by the rotation and forward swing of your arms, rather than the wrists.

    • 5

Allow the club to follow through after striking the ball. Also, let the line and tilt of your body follow the ball down the target line.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hitting the ball as hard as you can does not mean that the ball will go far and straight. A smooth motion to the swing, with a constant velocity, ensures that the club head will not deviate too much in flight and that the swing stays on the same trajectory.
