How to Place a Photo on a Mug
Photo gifts are a popular choice to give to loved ones. You can take your favorite photos and add them to nearly anything, including calendars, mouse pads, t-shirts, aprons and, yes, even coffee mugs. You can even use multiple photos to create collages on your mug. Photo mugs make thoughtful and practical gifts for friends and family members, especially those who live far away. These items can be created at home and sent anywhere in the world.

Purchase a plain white mug. You can find these at your local housewares store or restaurant supply company. You can also purchase them online.

Purchase transfer paper. You can find transfer paper for photo gifts at your local craft store or office supply store. Make sure that the type you select is made for mugs and ceramics.

Edit your photo. Choose your photo, and use a photo-editing program to resize it to fit on your mug. This is usually located under "Edit > Resize Image." You can also take this time to remove red eyes or fix other photo problems. Use the text function to add any text that you want to the photo.

Print the photo. Insert the transfer paper into the printer so that the printed image will appear on the glossy side. In your printer settings, make sure that you select the best quality for printing and choose the correct type of paper from the pull-down menu.

Trim the photo, and apply it. Use scissors to trim the photo so that it fits on your mug. Spray photo transfer fixative spray on the image, and allow it to dry completely. Place the image in the water for about a minute until the edges begin to curl. Slide the decal from the paper, and apply it directly to the mug. You can reposition it gently while it is still wet.

Allow it to dry. Place the mug in a safe place where it can dry for at least 3 hours.

Tips & Warnings
You can find varnish that will protect the mug at your local craft store. Apply after the image has dried.
