How to Remove the Fuel Pump in a 98 Camaro

The fuel pump on a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro provides fuel consistently to the engine, delivering it from the gas tank to the fuel injection manifold at high pressures. This pump is critical to the proper operation of the engine, and when it goes down, you won't be able to drive the Camaro until it's fixed. Fortunately, fixing the fuel pump is not very difficult. Before you replace the pump, though, you have to remove the old one.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel pressure gauge
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set
  • Pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the gas door and remove the gas tank fill cap. Pop the hood. Locate the Schrader valve on the fuel line, and then connect the fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve. Push the pressure relief valve on the gauge until the pressure dissipates, then remove the gauge and shut the hood.

    • 2

Jack up the rear end of the Camaro and set the car on jack stands. Unscrew the hose clamp connecting the gas tank filler neck to the gas tank, using the flat-head screwdriver. Lift up the jack until it contacts the bottom of the gas tank. Unbolt the straps holding up the tank, using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets, then slowly lower the gas tank down until you can access the top of the gas tank.

    • 3

Disconnect the fuel lines running to the fuel pump with a flat-head screwdriver or a pair of pliers, depending on the type of connectors that are holding on the lines. Unplug the wiring to the fuel pump and fuel sender unit by hand, then lower the tank down the rest of the way down with the jack.

    • 4

Unbolt the fuel pump and sending unit assembly from the gas tank, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lift out the assembly, then place it on a clean workspace. Remove the clamp connecting the fuel pump on the sending unit to the fuel line on the sender, using the pliers or a flat-head screwdriver. Then pull the pump out of the assembly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never smoke or have an open flame nearby while you're working on the fuel system of a vehicle. If you do, you risk causing a fire and injuring yourself and damaging the vehicle.
