How to Download Nintendo DS Games Onto an R4
The R4 is a Nintendo DS cartridge and a MicroSD card reader. This makes it possible to download game ROMs from your computer to the R4 to play on a Nintendo DS. Obtaining and downloading ROMs isn’t difficult to do for someone who knows basic Windows functions. ROMs are game files that are meant for people who already own the game to use. Of course, people abuse this, but there are consequences for pirating software.

Insert the MicroSD card into the USB MicroSD flash reader.

Insert the USB reader into an open USB port on your computer.

Open up the flash drive’s folder in “My Computer.” It should show up as "Removable Disk.”

Open your web browser and navigate to the R4 website.

Download the most recent R4 update ZIP, which can be found on the front page.

Right-click the ZIP file download and select “Extract all.” You can choose to extract the files into the same folder or choose a location.

Open the extracted folder and cut or copy the folders and files within.

Paste the folders and files into the flash drive’s folder.

Right-click any open area within the flash drive’s folder and select “New," then “New Folder.”

Name the new folder “Games.”

Navigate, in your web browser, to a game ROM website.

Download a Nintendo DS game ROM from the website.

Extract the ZIP file downloaded as mentioned in Step 6, but choose to extract the files directly into the flash drive’s “Games” folder.

Remove the flash drive from your computer and remove the MicroSD card from the flash drive.

Insert the MicroSD card into the R4 cartridge and insert the R4 into the DS.

Power on the DS and select “Games” to choose the game you downloaded and start playing.
