Water tanks can be used in your home to heat water or collect water runoff whenever it rains. One type of water tank that you can install for your home is a rainwater tank. This can be used to collect rainwater that you can use to water your yard or wash your car. You can install a rainwater tank by first determining the proper size tank that you will need.
Things You'll Need
- Cinder block
- Dish soap
- Gutter outlet
- Felt tip marker
- Power drill
- Tin snips
- Gutter mesh
- Tank screen or mesh
Determine where you want to install your water tank. The tank will need to be placed on level ground where your gutters are located. Build a platform from cinder block as a base for the tank, if necessary.
Clean the tank with dish soap and water. Thoroughly rinse out the tank with a garden hose to remove any remaining soap.
Climb up the ladder and place the gutter outlet inside the gutter and trace around the bottom with the felt tip marker. Drill a hole in the inside corner or the outline, through the gutter, with the power drill.
Cut around the outline with the tin snips to create a hole and then insert the gutter outlet. Secure the gutter outlet by inserting screws into the screw holes and tightening them with the power drill.
Place gutter mesh inside the gutter to reduce the amount of debris being washed down from the roof.
Place a tank screen or mesh cover over the opening of the water tank. This will prevent debris that comes through the downspout from getting into the tank.
Set the tank in place and then attach the top of the downspout to the bottom of the gutter outlet.
Tips & Warnings
- Tank screens will also keep bugs and pests from entering the water tank.
