Leasing consultants help potential tenants choose a rental unit. The properties may be residential or commercial units. In addition to leasing units, leasing consultants deal with collecting rent, scheduling maintenance requests, dealing with tenant issues, renewal of leases and dealing with move-outs.

      Place a job posting for a leasing consultant. The posting should request a candidate with good customer service skills, sales skills, and a high school diploma or GED. Previous leasing agent experience is preferred. A valid driving license should be required since leasing consultants often drive potential tenants to different units. You should also place a job posting in the Sunday edition of your local newspaper.

After the job posting comes the important process of filtering through the resumes to seek candidates that fit the qualifications for the leasing consultant position. Seek candidates with prior experience, a consistent employment history and customer service skills. Seek candidates that describe themselves as personable, results-oriented and goal-oriented. Also, candidates with strong verbal, written and computer skills would be beneficial to completing the job requirements.

      Interview candidates. The strongest candidates in the resume pool should be asked for a face-to-face interview. In-person interviews offer an opportunity to see the candidates’ personalities. Leasing consultants need to be personable and able to build rapport quickly.

      Check references.The interview process should have narrowed candidates down further because even though some people may appear on paper to possess the skills and qualities necessary to be successful leasing consultants, they may not. The top three candidates should have their professional and personal references checked. Reference checking provides information about the candidate from another party. It offers another perspective into the candidate’s work ethic.
