Making a hooded towel is one of the easiest and most fun craft projects you can do. This project requires only a small outlay of money for the towels and makes a great homemade gift for babies and young children. It is also a very easy project to personalize if you have some extra time and want to make the towel unique. These towels can easily be made in an afternoon or less and can be a variety of sizes or colors depending on the towels used.
Lay each towel out so that the towel is wider than it is tall, making sure that if the towels are not the same on both sides, the sides match with the wrong side facing up. Fold each towel in half widthwise, marking the spot where the fold is with a safety pin. This should be the center of each towel. Now pin the towels together so that the middle of each towel is attached to each other.
2
Overlap the edges of the full size towel and the hand towel a bit, with the hand towel on top. This will be where the towels will be sewn together. Sewing with a machine will be faster, make a stronger seam and probably be neater, but some people prefer hand sewing or the towels are too thick to sew with their sewing machine. If machine sewing, sew towels together from right side, if hand sewing, sew on the wrong side. The towels should still be pinned together in the middle of each towel when you begin sewing.
3
Start at the edge of the hand towel and sew towards the safety pin, being careful to keep seam even. When you get to the pin, remove it and continue sewing to the other edge of hand towel.
4
Flip the newly sewn towel over to sew the top edge of hand towel together. Sewing this seam will create the hood. Make sure to sew from the side that will be the inside of the hood so that the seam will be neat when the hood is seen from the outside.
5
Embelish the hooded towel with embroidery, if desired. Use contrasting thread to sew flowers, shapes or initials into the towel.
Tips & Warnings
If towels will be used for swimming or the beach, consider sewing pockets on the outside.
