How to Bend Sheet Copper

Sheet copper comes in a fine layer that can easily be manipulated for use in many different projects. You can bend a piece of sheet copper by simply heating it and then bending it around a metal form. You just need to find a metal that is in the shape you need the finished piece to be. The amount of time you spend heating the copper will vary with the thickness of the sheeting.

Things You'll Need

  • Sheet copper
  • Metal form
  • C clamps
  • Blowtorch
  • Mallet
  • Secure the bottom of a sheet of copper to the bottom of a metal form. Attach the copper to the form with clamps.

  • Hold a blowtorch to the backside of the copper. Hold it several inches away from the copper.

  • Move the blowtorch around the copper to heat the surface evenly. The copper will have a slight glow to it when it is very hot; that is when you can stop heating the copper.

  • Bang the copper against the form with a mallet. Start at the lowest art of the sheet, near the clamp.

  • Work slowly upward until the sheet is bent around the form. Secure the top of the sheet with more clamps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut the metal to the correct size before bending it.
  • Do not touch the metal until it is cool; hot metal can cause severe burns.
