Sports equipment, memorabilia and all sport related merchandise are popular items that often appreciate in value over time. Evidence of this is found in sports stores across the country, which sell vintage baseball cards, autographed jerseys and game balls, pictures of Hall of Fame players and many other items. If you're a sports enthusiast, opening your own sports store may be a dream job for you. In order to be a successful store owner, you have to have the merchandise that people need, and will want to buy.

Obtain a variety of sports equipment, or sports merchandise. You'll have to decide whether or not you want to specialize in sports equipment only, or sports memorabilia. You can try to do both, but this will require a large amount of start-up capital. Ensure that you have popular items, brands and a large selection of both.

Obtain any licensing and permits that you may need to open your store. Many municipalities and states require a business license and have zoning ordinances for certain types of businesses stipulating where they can operate. Ensure that you know all your local laws and ordinances, and permit requirements.

Lease or rent a commercial property. The key here is location. You don't want your store to be in the middle of nowhere, where virtually no customer will be able to find your store. Choose a place with high traffic, and near popular stores that are frequented by patrons. Inside a shopping mall, or in a neighborhood shopping center plaza, are great locations for a sports store.

Advertise your store on the local radio or television station, and print fliers and business cards to get the word out to potential customers. If you specialize in sports memorabilia, placing business cards and fliers in sports equipment stores can draw in potential customers. You can set up an arrangement with the store owner, and place his business cards and fliers in your store as an even trade.

Set up a website offering your services, and add a Paypal or Clickbank account so that shoppers can buy directly online. This will enhance your business by allowing you to sell merchandise to people that live too far away to come to your store.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should also check into obtaining a Retail Sales Tax certificate. This will allow you to collect sales tax, and exempt you from paying sales tax on purchases that you make that you'll be selling in your store.
