How to Add Memory to an XBox 360
The Xbox 360 is a gaming console not only capable of playing high-definition games, but also of storing movies, music, and pictures--provided that you have enough memory. For example, the Xbox 360 Arcade system only includes a 256MB memory unit, which can be used up very quickly. If you ever want to add some serious memory to your Xbox 360, you're going to need to add an external hard drive. These units are easy to install, come in a variety of storage sizes (20GB to 250GB as of 2010), and let you save games and other media.

Select and purchase your hard drive. Hard drives can be found at virtually any video game/electronics retailer or online. If you're just looking to save games, 20GB should be plenty. But if you're in the market for saving movies, music and photos, as well as downloadable game content from the Xbox LIVE marketplace, then look for a bigger hard drive.

Power off your console and remove all cords and cables from it. You don't want the machine powering on while you're installing the hard drive, and possibly corrupting a file or some hardware.

Lay your Xbox 360 up vertically so that the hard drive bay is facing up. The hard drive bay is the flat area on the top of your Xbox (or to the left of the DVD drive if you have the console lying horizontally), with a small input in the middle.

Slide the hard drive into the hard drive bay, tapered end first, and push it down until it clicks. Now you can plug your Xbox back in and power it on, where the main menu should recognize the hard drive. It's now installed and free to use.

Tips & Warnings
If you've yet to purchase an Xbox 360 and want good memory, then avoid the Xbox 360 Arcade. It's more economically feasible to purchase one of the Elite models, which come with a larger hard drive already built in, as well as other goodies like an Xbox LIVE pass and a headset.
If you still want extra memory, the Xbox 360 recently began supporting flash drives, which can be plugged into the USB port in front of the Xbox (up to 32GB of memory).
