Become a licensed insurance professional in Montana.

The Montana Department of Insurance requires its insurance professionals to be licensed if they wish to receive commissions for selling insurance. Although Montana is one of the few states that do not have a pre-licensing education requirement prior to obtaining an insurance license, they do expect insurance producers to have a sound understanding of the insurance process. To obtain an insurance license, take the initiative to learn the information necessary to pass the state exam.

Instructions

Comply with the age and residency requirements. Insurance agents must be a Montana resident of at least 18 years of age.

Familiarize yourself with the test material. There are no pre-licensing education requirements to become a Montana licensed insurance agent. There are study guides and online material to help pass the test. Pearson Vue, the company contracted by the Montana Insurance Department to administer the licensing exams, has exam content outlines and a helpful "Candidate Handbook" which gives pertinent information for passing the licensing exam. In addition to the downloadable brochures, take a practice test on the website.

Schedule the exam. Once you have familiarized yourself with the materials on the test, go back to the Pearson Vue website and schedule a date and time to take the exam.

    • 5

Get fingerprinted. Montana requires its first-time insurance applicants to get fingerprinted the same day as taking the exam. Fingerprinting services are offered at the Billings and Missoula testing centers and the fee is $47.75. Fingerprints will be checked against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the state's Department of Justice (DOJ) databases.

Pass the exam and complete the individual producer application for license. Download the application the department website. Along with the application, submit proof of passing the licensing exam. Once the state has received all of the paperwork and satisfactory criminal background check, it will issue the insurance license.
