Learn to repair broken hinges on a Gateway laptop.

Laptop hinges wear out most often when the LCD panel is repetitively opened and closed forcefully, or carelessly. It is not unheard of for hinges to break due to excessive wear and tear. When the hinges on your laptop break, it can be difficult, and in most cases impossible, to operate your laptop. One of the best ways to repair your Gateway laptop's hinges is to simply replace them with new hinges. You can replace the hinges yourself for a fraction of the cost of hiring a laptop technician to do it for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase replacement hinges for your Gateway laptop (see Resources). You can search for replacement hinges by the model number of your Gateway computer to match the exact hinge with your laptop.

    • 2

Turn off your laptop and then disconnect the power cable from its socket. Close the LCD panel until it clicks shut. Place the laptop face-down and then remove the battery pack from its compartment.

    • 3

Remove the two Phillips-head screws from inside the battery compartment and then place the laptop face-up and open the LCD screen all the way.

    • 4

Pry up the hinge cover--a thin strip of plastic located between the keyboard and the LCD screen--and then remove it from the laptop and set it aside.

    • 5

Hold the LCD panel with one hand, and with the other hand remove the Phillips-head screws from the back edge of the laptop just beneath the hinges. Lift up on the LCD panel, remove the exposed hinges, and then place the new hinges in the slots where the old hinges were. Replace the Phillips-head screws on the back edge of the laptop and inside the battery compartment, and then replace the hinge cover and battery pack.
