Highlighting with the right color blends all the colors in your hair together.

Putting highlights in your hair can hide grays, make your hair look fuller, and bring out your skin tone and eye color. Highlighting is putting streaks of a lighter color (lighter than your original hair color) into your hair. All colors of highlights don't look good on every color of hair though. It is important to find the right highlighting color for your hair color to enhance your features and the color of your hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Study your natural hair color, skin tone and eye color. Decide if you want your highlights to be light or strong. For lighter skin tones, you will want darker shades of highlights, and for darker skin tones, you will want to use lighter shades of highlights. If you have a bright eye color, dark hues in hair will help your eyes stand out.

Add blonde highlights to light brown and blonde hair. The lighter shade of hair you have the lighter you should go in the highlights. If you have an extremely blonde hair color, you might want to use lowlights of a light brown color to blend your hair.

    • 3

Highlight you hair with caramel or red colors if you have darker brown hair. These colors look natural on brunettes.

    • 4

Go only three or less shades lighter than your natural hair color if you have dark brown or black hair. Highlighting colors that go well with darker hair are red and tortoise.

    • 5

Get dark brown, black or light-blonde highlights for red hair. If it is a lighter tone of red, the blonde is probably your best option.

    • 6

Go to a hair salon and ask to see samples of hair colors. Using the suggestions in steps 2 through 4, hold up the colors that would blend well with your hair and look in a mirror. Decide what color or colors you like best for your personal preference and go with that color.
