How to Make DSL Internet Faster

How to Make DSL Internet Faster thumbnail
You can improve your DSL Internet speed.

DSL or Digital Subscriber Line uses your telephone line to connect to the Internet. Unlike a dial-up connection, DSL does not occupy the phone line while it is connected to the web, allowing a user to make calls while surfing the Internet. It is also typically faster than most dial-up connections. However, if you are not completely satisfied with your DSL Internet speed, you may be able to take some steps to optimize your connection speed.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a new modem if your existing one is older than five or six years. Make sure the modem you are buying follows V.92 standards (see Resources). Almost all new modems available in electronics stores will follow these standards.

    • 2

Use "DSL Speed" freeware to boost your DSL speed (see Resources). Click on the "Download Software" link and use an extracting software to launch the installer wizard and complete installation. Launch the program from your Start menu, select "Process" and then click on "Advance Optimize." Click on "Process" again. Restart your computer. Launch your web browser and surf the Internet. You should see a significant improvement in your DSL connection speed.

Clear your web browser cache. On your "Internet Explorer" toolbar, click on "Tools" and select "Internet Options." Click on "General" and hit "Delete" under the Browsing History section. On the menu that appears, check "Temporary Internet files" and "Cookies" and hit "Delete" again.

    • 4

Increase your DSL modem port speed. Click on the "Start" button in Windows Vista and Type "devmgmt.msc" in the "Start Search" box then hit "Enter." (On older Windows systems, select "Run" from the list of programs then type in the words.) This will launch your "Device Manager." Scroll down and click on "Modems." Right-click on your modem device and select "Properties." Click on the "Modem" tab. Click on the "Maximum Port Speed" drop-down menu and select the highest option available. Click on "OK."

Minimize the amount of downloads to free up DSL bandwidth while you are browsing the web. Downloading too many files at once can clog up your DSL connection.

    • 6

Use a faster web browser than your default Internet Explorer. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox will improve your browsing speed (see Resources for download links).
