How to Make Beaded Heat Pads

How to Make Beaded Heat Pads thumbnail
Warm beaded heat pads in the microwave.

Beaded heat pads have a definite advantage over electric heating pads. You don't have to worry about cords and generally, you can fall asleep on a beaded heat pad without worry. Most electric heating pads warn against falling asleep or even laying directly on one. Beaded heat pads are convenient because you can heat them in the microwave to whatever temperature you need. Beaded heat pads are easy to make and cheaper than an electric heating pad.

Instructions

  1. Cutting the Fabric

    • 1

Fold the fabric, right sides (sides that will show when bag is complete) facing inward.

    • 2

Cut out the shape you want, leaving at least ½ inch for a seam allowance.

    • 3

Use pinking shears to trim edges to prevent raveling or sew a zigzag stitch ¼ inch from each edge.

    Sewing the Fabric and Stuffing

    • 4

Set the sewing machine to make small stitches so filler material cannot escape.

    • 5

With right sides together, sew ½ inch from the edge on all sides, but leaving a 2-inch opening on one end for turning inside out and for inserting the filler.

    • 6

Turn the pad inside out, making sure to push corners and edges out completely.

    • 7

Fill the pad with the filler material at least half full, more if necessary, but keep in mind if the pad is too full, it will be rigid and uncomfortable. Leaving some room will allow the pad to conform better to body areas.

    • 8

Sew the opening together either by hand with small stitches, or by machine. To use, very lightly spray water on the pad and place in microwave one to three minutes, depending on how warm you want the pad to be.

Tips & Warnings

  • As an alternative to buying fabric, use an old flannel or fleece robe, or old towels or washcloths.

  • Experiment with shapes other than rectangles. A cylinder, for example, might do better on the lower back while sitting in a chair.

  • Experiment with different fillers. Barley, split peas, and cherry pits can be used. For fragrance, add herbs and spices. Pre-mix the herbs and spices with the filler and let sit in a closed container for 3 days, stirring from time to time. This will blend the spices and herbs into the filler before adding it to the pad.

  • Making a pillowcase for the pad will provide extra protection for the pad as well as add to its attractiveness.

  • Use only cotton fabrics in microwaves. If you make a pillowcase from something other than cotton, take it off before putting the pad in the microwave.

  • Do not heat the pad too long in the microwave. When using spices, it is a good idea to place a glass of water in the microwave for added moisture.
