How to Locate My State Tax Return
Your state may request an audit or a copy of your tax return. Taxing authorities can challenge tax returns for three years from the date filed or due, whichever is later. Additionally, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has six years to review records. As a result, you should keep copies of your returns for a longer period if required by the IRS, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation. To locate your state tax return, using several methods yields the best results.

1
Download a copy of your return. If you filed your taxes using an online system like TurboTax, you can download previous year returns. Login to your account and locate a "download center" or "previous year returns." Select the return you are searching for and download the portable document format (PDF) copy. Print the return and keep it in a safe place or save them to your computer.

2
Contact your tax adviser. Your tax adviser should have a copy of your previous returns going back at least three years.

Contact your state's department of revenue, taxation or treasury. Each state keeps returns for a limited time. For example, California keeps state returns for three and one-half years, according to the California Franchise Tax Board. Download or request a form for a copy of your return. Complete and submit the form with the required fee.

Contact a tax filing service. Companies like FileLate or Robinson Tax Service assist taxpayers with locating lost returns. (See Resource for links to both companies.)
