How to Update Firmware
Firmware is found not only in computers, but in electronic devices such as televisions and Blu-ray players. The firmware acts as a mini operating system for the electronic devices, and allows computer hardware to communicate with the motherboard of the system. The firmware update process is slightly different depending on what device you are installing the firmware.
Instructions

1
Open your Internet browser and navigate to the manufacturing site of the hardware or electronic device you want to update, for example, Hewlett-Packard or Sony.
-
2
On the manufacturer's website, choose "Support," then search for the particular device for which you need the firmware update.
-
-
3
Select the operating system you are running (if the update is for computer hardware). Click the "Download" link next to the available firmware. This downloads the file directly to your computer.
-
4
Double-click the downloaded file (if you are updating your computer). An installation wizard appears on the screen. Follow the short set of prompts to complete the firmware update for your computer. This completes the update process for computer users. If you are updating other electronic equipment, you must continue to Step 5.
-
5
Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port of your computer, then click "Start," "(My) Computer," and double-click the removable device icon. Make sure you are using either a brand new flash drive or a flash drive that does not have any files saved to it. If you are using a used flash drive, the electronic device may not detect the actual firmware update, but only the files you saved on the drive first.
-
6
Click and drag the firmware update into the open removable device window. Once you have finished copying files to the flash drive, close the window, right-click the removable device icon, and select "Eject."
-
7
Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port of the electronic device you want to update. If no USB port is available, you are unable to update the firmware. Once the USB device is detected, the electronic product imports the data from the firmware update. Do not disconnect the flash drive or turn off the electronic device at this time. A message on the television screen (or LCD screen for Blu-ray players) appears on screen, stating the update has finished. Once you see this message, you may remove the flash drive and restart the electronic device.
