Unless you change their default settings, all modern Web browsers store bits of information about your browsing history. In addition to storing the title and address of each page you visit, most browsers maintain a list of the terms you enter in form fields, including the input boxes used by search engines. Fortunately, you can quickly delete the contents of this list and protect your privacy. Once you know where to look, the process takes just a few clicks in Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome.

Instructions

  1. With Internet Explorer

      Click "Tools" in the top menu bar or the "Safety" button near the top-right corner of the browser window.

      Select "Delete Browsing History."

      Check the box labeled "Form data" and click "Delete" in Internet Explorer 8. If you use Internet Explorer 7, simply click the "Delete forms" button.

    With Firefox

    • 4

      Click "Tools" in the top menu bar.

      Select "Clear Recent History."

      Select "Everything" from the drop-down menu at the top of the window.

      Check the "Form & Search History" box.

      Click "Clear Now."

    With Chrome

      Click the wrench icon in the top-right corner of the window and select "Options."

      Select the "Under the Hood" tab and click the "Clear browsing data" button.

      Check the box labeled "Clear saved form data."

    • 12

      Select "Everything" from the adjacent drop-down menu.

      Click "Clear browsing data."
