How to Correct Yahoo Messenger Installation Error
Yahoo! installation errors is often associated with a bad/outdated installer file found on Windows XP. Remove the original copy of Yahoo Messenger installed on your computer. Windows XP users Go to "Start" then "Control Panel" and navigate to "Add/Remove" programs. Find the Yahoo Messenger program and delete it by clicking on the program (should be in alphabetical order) and choosing the remove option.

Check that you are running a newer version of the Windows Installer application, you should have at least Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2) installed. Visit the Microsoft link in our resources section to check if you have at least this installer setup. Microsoft will tell you if you have a newer version installed when you click on download and attempt to install the package.

Reset your computer after installing the new installer program and removing the original application.

Download the newest version of Yahoo! Messenger from the Yahoo! Messenger page located in our resources section. It's suggested that you save the file to your desktop for easy locating when needed.

Close all open programs currently running on your PC. You can close all programs by clicking "alt + ctrl + delete" and then right clicking and choosing "close" for each open application.

Double click on the Yahoo! Messenger installation file from the location you chose to save it, such as your desktop. Follow the basic installation instructions for the program. Please note other application installations may be given, uncheck those boxes to install only the Yahoo! Messenger application.

Click on the Yahoo Messenger icon that appears on your desktop to test the program. You can also navigate to "Start" then "Programs" and then click on the Yahoo Messenger folder followed by the Yahoo Messenger application icon. If the program launches you are ready to use the program.

Installing the newest version of Yahoo Messenger will often fix the installation error of older programs. Yahoo Messenger version 9.1 is known to have an installation error more than most others, upgrading your installation setup to the newest version should fix the problem, however it's still recommended you remove the trouble version before installing the upgrade.
