How to Reverse a Dryer Door

Save

When you move your dryer from one location to another, you may find it necessary to reverse the swing of the dryer door. Although there is no one way to reverse a dryer door, the general steps are universal among all manufacturers. Some manufacturers offer door reversal kits. These kits have a hinge cover, handle filler and a door handle to match the contour of the door when reversing the door swing. Save the existing covers on your door in the event you need to reverse the door back later. Door reversal kits are available from the manufacturer and from appliance repair facilities.

Things You'll Need

  • Putty knife
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Door reversing kit
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Locate and remove the handle filler currently on the door. The handle filler is on the opposite side of the door across from the handle. There is a small seam on the door surface. Insert a putty knife between the seam to pop the filler away from the door. Remove the hinge cover on the handle side of the door in the same manner.

  • Open the dryer door, and remove the screws securing the door hinge to the dryer with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Ask a friend to hold the dryer door while you remove the screws. Place the dryer door on a padded flat surface. Remove the screws securing the door handle to the door with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the hinge screws with the screwdriver. Pull the handle and the hinge away from the door.

  • Place the new door handle from the kit on the opposite side of the door where you removed the handle cover. Secure the door handle with the securing screws. Snap the hinge cover from the kit on the edge of the door in front of the handle.

  • Place the door hinge on the opposite side of the door and secure with the retaining screws. Place the handle cover on the face of the door near the hinge. Push the handle cover in until the cover snaps into place.

  • Remove the plugs that cover the hinge mounting holes on the inside lip of the door opening on the original handle side. Most plugs will pull out with your fingers. If necessary, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the plugs away from the dryer. Insert the plugs into the hinge holes on the opposite side.

  • Ask your helper to hold the dryer door while you secure the dryer door hinge to the dryer with the mounting screws. Close the dryer door and adjust the hinge as necessary.
