How to Unzip Zip Files on a Mac

Zip files are archive files compressed with the Zip compression algorithm. Decompressing a Zip file is called “unzipping.” The Mac OS X operating system version 10.5 and above includes Archive Utility, an archive expansion tool that unzips zipped files and performs other compression and expansion tasks. Archive Utility is the default Mac application for unzipping Zip files.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the location of the Zip file in the Finder.

    • 2

Double-click on the Zip file. Archive Utility will launch automatically and unzip the file to a folder within the folder that contains the original Zip file.

    • 3

Double-click on the new folder to reveal the uncompressed contents of the file.

Tips & Warnings

  • You have the option of launching Archive Utility manually by going to the “Macintosh HD” volume in the Finder, double-clicking on “System,” double-clicking on “Library,” double-clicking on “CoreServices” and double-clicking on “Archive Utility.” Go to the “Archive Utility” menu and select “Preferences” to make adjustments to the settings.
