How to Calculate on Base Percentages
Statisticians and coaches use on base percentage in baseball to see how often a player reaches the bases compared to how many chances the player gets to hit. On base percentage is different than batting average. On base percentage will be higher than batting average because on base percentage includes other ways besides a hit a player can reach base or advance a runner.

1
Add together the player's hits, walks, and times hit by pitched. For example, a player with 20 hits, five walks, and one hit by pitch will have a total of 26.
-
2
Add together the player's at bats, walks, hit by pitches and sacrifice flies. In our example, the player had 40 at bats, five walks, was hit by a pitch once and had three sacrifice flies for a total of 49.

Divide the number calculated in Step 1 by the number calculated in Step 2. In our example, 26 divided by 49 equals an on base percentage of 0.5306 or 53.06 percent.
