Practice Hypnotism

Hypnosis is an excellent method of modifying behavior, resolving personal issues or relieving stress. Under hypnosis, a person is typically very relaxed while in a heightened state of concentration and focus. People under hypnosis are more susceptible to suggestion than usual; this makes hypnosis a powerful tool for positive change. Hypnosis does not strip a person of their free will; a person cannot be made to do something that goes against their better judgment. Hypnosis may be induced by a hypnotist or can be self-induced. Practicing self-hypnosis can be done at your leisure.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what you want to accomplish. Is there a particular habit you are trying to break, such as smoking or drinking? Are you attempting to retrieve a specific memory? Or do you just want to relieve stress?

    • 2

Prepare your affirmation or purpose in the present tense. This is very important; your subconscious mind is literal and does not interpret meanings. For instance, if you're trying to stop smoking, a good message would be "I am a non-smoker" not "I will quit smoking" (whether you have actually quit or not is irrelevant). Whatever message you plant in your subconscious will take root. Your message should be prepared before your self-hypnosis session.

    • 3

Find a quiet spot where you will not be disturbed and can relax. You may want to sit as opposed to lying down. When lying down you run the risk of falling asleep.

    • 4

Breathe deeply and steadily, close your eyes and relax your body. Visualize stress exiting your body, leaving you calm and relaxed. Relaxing music can help this process.

    • 5

Deliver your message or affirmation. Visualize your message. If your affirmation is "I am a non-smoker" picture yourself as someone who does not smoke. The more vivid your message, the greater its effects.

    • 6

When you feel you've accomplished your intention, open your eyes. A self-hypnosis session typically runs between 15 and 25 minutes, but can be extended as long as you like.
