How to Claim a Domain Name

A domain name is a string of text used to identify a server on the Internet. Domain names are most often used for websites and can end in .com, .net, .edu and a number of other extensions. Many domain names cost about $10 to register for one year and can be registered for up to 10 years in advance. You can register a domain name with many different services on the web--just make sure the domain name you pick is both memorable and relevant to your website.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to a domain name registrar using your web browser. A few examples are GoDaddy, Register.com, and Network Solutions (see Resources).

    • 2

Type your desired domain name into the URL search box located on the domain registrar's home page, then click "Search" to see if your domain name is available.

    • 3

If your domain name is available, place a checkmark next to it and click the "Add" button to add it to your shopping cart.

    • 4

Click the "Continue to Registration" or "Check Out" button to move to the shopping cart page. Here you can view the details of your registration and choose the amount of time for which you'd like to register your domain. When you're satisfied, fill in your financial information and submit your order. The domain name should now be registered to you for the amount of time you specified.
