How to Empty the Vista Update Cache

When you use Windows Update to download and install updates to the Windows Vista operating system, certain files get placed into the Vista Update cache. This is simply a directory that stores these files in the event that your computer needs to refer back to them at a later date. Emptying the Windows Vista Update cache, which involves running a program called Disk Cleanup, will free up space on your hard drive.

Instructions

1. Click "Start."

2. Click "All Programs."

3. Click "Accessories."

4. Click "System Tools."

5. Click "Disk Cleanup." Select the "C" drive from the Disk Cleanup drop-down menu and click "OK." Check the box next to "Downloaded Program Files," and then click "OK" to empty the Windows Vista Update cache directory.
