How to Stop DNS Client Service

How to Stop DNS Client Service thumbnail
DNS services cache domain name lookups.

The Windows DNS client caches domain lookups and makes finding domain computers more efficient. However, the service is used only on the local machine, and it can take up too much memory on a machine that does not have much random access memory installed. The service is found using the Windows Control Panel. You can stop, start and restart the DNS client service on your desktop machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Settings." Click "Control Panel" to open a new window. Double-click "Administrative Tools."

    • 2

Double-click "Services" to view a list of services running on your Windows machine. Click the "Name" column header to sort each service by name. Scroll down to the service labeled "DNS Client."

    • 3

Double-click "DNS Client." This opens a properties window. Click the "Stop" button to stop the service. If you want to permanently stop the service even after the computer is reboot, select "Disabled" from the "Startup Type" drop-down menu.

    • 4

Click "Apply" to save your settings. Click "OK" to close the service properties window.
