How to Read Mercury Engine Codes

Your Mercury vehicle uses an on-board diagnostic system to generate and store trouble codes. These trouble codes tell the driver, specifically, what is wrong with the vehicle. They can only be retrieved by using an OBD scan tool available at any auto parts store. Once you've retrieved the engine codes, you can fix your vehicle. If you ignore the "Check Engine" light that comes on as a result of the system generating a trouble code, you risk seriously damaging the engine, fuel or exhaust system on your vehicle.

  • Locate the OBD scan tool port under the steering column to the left of the main fuse panel.

  • Plug the OBD scan tool into the open access port on your Mercury. Make sure the connection is secure.

  • Turn the ignition to the "On" position.

  • Wait for the display on your scan tool to read "OK" then turn off the ignition and unplug the scan tool.

  • Press "Menu" on the scan tool and use the scroll buttons to locate the "Stored Engine Codes" menu. Select the menu and you'll see all of the engine codes you just retrieved from the engine. Use your Mercury's service manual to translate the engine codes.
