Homemade Swords
A sword is a necessary component when impersonating the likes of Captain Hook, King Arthur Jack Sparrow and a range of other memorable imaginary characters. However, purchasing a real sword is expensive and also poses safety issues. Thus, creating a homemade sword to have around the house facilitates make-believe games between children or as an addition to costumes for Halloween. It's also cheap to make as many of the materials are probably already around the house.

1
Trace the blade for your sword onto a piece of cardboard. You can make any shape that you like, however as guideline, according to Daniellesplace.com, the blade can be 20 inches long, 3 inches across the bottom and taper at the top of the sword to 1 inch across. Use a ruler if necessary.
-
2
Trace the handle of the sword on a piece of cardboard. Essentially for the handle you should make a "T" shape, with the top of the "T" around 5-to-6 inches and the middle part of the "T" around 4 inches in length.

3
Cut out both the sword and the handle using a pair of scissors or an Exacto knife.
-
4
Glue the handle to the bottom of the sword so that they slightly overlap. Take a 20-inch dowel or stick and place it on top of the blade so that it runs vertically down the middle of the blade, overlapping onto the handle. This will help to fortify your sword.
-
5
Wrap masking tape around the point between the handle and the blade to reinforce the bond.
-
6
Rip off a long piece of aluminum foil, large enough to cover the blade of the sword. Wrap the blade in the aluminum foil and tape it in place.
-
7
Paint the handle of the sword any color you wish and add details in gold or silver paint such as a skull and crossbones, an eye, a treasure chest, etc.
