How to Build a Pedestal Platform Bed

Save

Bed frames are typically constructed out of metal, in which sits a mattress on top of a box spring. If you do not want to use a metal frame or box spring, a pedestal platform bed can be built. This type of bed is typically a box shape, made from wood, and of various sizes, such as 54 inches wide by 80 inches long. You can build a pedestal platform bed by first measuring the dimensions of the room to make sure it will fit.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 2-by-6 boards
  • Circular saw
  • Screws
  • Power drill
  • 3/4-inch plywood
  • Table saw
  • Measure two 2 by 6 boards with the tape measure and mark at 54 inches. Cut the boards with the table saw. Measure and mark two more 2 by 6 boards at 80 inches, and cut them with the table saw.

  • Place the four boards in the shape of a rectangle, with the 54-inch pieces of lumber inside of the 80-inch pieces of lumber.

  • Drill two pilot holes into each corners where the boards meet with the power drill.

  • Insert the screws into the holes and tighten with the power drill.

  • Cut three pieces of 2 by 6 lumber to 54 inches long with the circular saw.

  • Measure the length of one side of the bed frame and make a mark every 26 inches with the pencil. Repeat this step on the other side of the frame.

  • Insert the 54-inch pieces of 2 by 6 lumber into the frame and align them to the marks made in Step 6. Drill pilot holes into the board, through the frame, with the power drill. Secure the boards to the frame with the screws.

  • Cut two sections of 3/4-inch plywood to a measurement of 27 inches by 80 inches with the table saw.

  • Lay the two sections of plywood on top of the bed frame. Secure the plywood to the bed frame with screws. Place a screw every 12 inches around the perimeter of the bed frame.

  • Set a mattress on top of the frame to complete the project.

Tips & Warnings

  • Casters can be added to the bottom of the frame to make the pedestal platform mobile.
