How to Protect Yourself From School Violence
School violence has become a very controversial subject in schools, homes and the media ever since the Columbine school shootings in 1999. The subject always was a concern but Columbine served as a catalyst that galvanized a national debate regarding the causes of school violence and how best to prevent it. There have been multiple publicized school incidents since then, and bullying still is prevalent in today's schools. Protecting yourself against school violence can be very challenging and requires a great deal of diligence.

1
Train in martial arts. While avoiding confrontation always is preferable, there can be times when you have to defend yourself against an attacker and avoidance is not an option. A good martial arts school should focus on discipline, respect and avoiding conflict as much as it does on self-defense techniques.

2
Communicate with teachers and parents. Let them know about any problems or concerns regarding particular students or violent incidents.

3
Prevent yourself from adding to the problem. Do not bully, tease, or otherwise harass other students. If there is someone you do not get along with, do your best to not be around that person and try to remain civil when there are times you have to share space. Never bring a weapon to school as they are likely to cause more problems than they can solve.
-
4
Trust your instincts. If a situation feels threatening, listen to your intuition and either exit the situation if you can or notify someone as soon as possible.
-
5
Remain calm when a violent situation arises. Many perpetrators do what they do in the hope of eliciting an emotional response and panic is not going to benefit you in any way. Stay as relaxed as possible, exit the situation as soon as you can and try to intellectually evaluate what is causing the situation and what can possibly bring about a resolution.
