How to Find Discontinued Yarn

How to Find Discontinued Yarn thumbnail
All the yarn you inherited from your grandmother is more than likely discontinued.

Discontinued yarn is a very popular item, as some of the yarn that was made in the 1960s and 1970s were some of the most interesting color combinations available. Also, there is nothing worse than running out of a particular color of yarn while you are in mid project, but with all the companies changing colors frequently, it happens more and more often. Discontinued yarn is sometimes difficult to find, but if you do find what you're looking for, buy all that is available--you may never see it again.

Instructions

Check out estate sales. In most cases, estate sales are sales of families trying to get rid of their deceased family member's excess belongings. Most of the time, these deceased family members were elderly and would have stores of discontinued yarn, books and other items that you may never have seen or could possibly use.

Look through online auction sites for discontinued yarn. In many instances, people will post some of their excess stash to clear out their craft rooms or even their garage. In many cases, there will be a fair amount of yarn that you can use for a project.

Check out your local Craigslist website to see if there are people in the arts and crafts section clearing out yarn. Most of the time, they will just have a post of multiple kinds of leftovers that may or may not be discontinued or vintage. It's always worth a look though, as you may get lucky with some of the colors or even the textures that you find.

Contact the manufacturer of the yarn you are looking for directly to see if it has any of the yarn in its warehouse. Just because a certain color or brand of yarn may have been discontinued doesn't necessarily mean that the warehouse doesn't have any left in stock.
