  1. Popular Search Engines

    • 1

Focus on the most popular search engines to submit your site. Many relevant search engines from the 1990s still exist, such as Dogpile, Excite and AltaVista to name a few. The sites listed below are the ones most Internet users return to on a regular basis, and they will also be the best source for generating traffic to your site.

Submit your affiliate website to Google. You can do this by visiting Google's home page, clicking on the "About Google" link at the bottom, then clicking on the "Submit your content to Google" link on the right side of the page and following the instructions. Google operates more than one million servers located in data centers throughout the world. Google says it processes more than one billion search requests and 24 petabytes of data generated by users on a daily basis. That's equal to one quadrillion bytes, or 1,000 terabytes---a lot of search traffic.

Submit your website to Bing, which is the new version of the old MSN search engine. The Internet Explorer toolbar uses Bing as its default search engine, meaning it is constantly in use by people searching the Internet. As of December 2009, Bing had a little more than 3 percent of the search engine market, and it continues to grow thanks to aggressive online marketing strategies and a TV advertising campaign. You can submit your site to Bing by visiting www.bing.com/webmaster-there is no direct link to this page from the Bing website. Once you are in Bing's "Webmaster Center," click on the link at the bottom of the page that says "Submit your site's URL," and follow the instructions.

Submit your website to Ask.com. This search engine, which used to be called AskJeeves, used to prompt Internet users to enter a question, and it would return results based on keywords in the query. Today, Ask.com is more like a regular search engine, and extremely popular thanks to a TV advertising campaign and its sponsorship of a NASCAR racing team. You can submit your site to Ask.com by visiting about.ask.com---no direct link from the Ask.com home page exists---and clicking on the "Help Central" link on the left side of the page. From there, click on the "Webmasters" link and then the "Searchable FAQ Database" link. There, under the "Top 5 Frequently Asked Questions" is a link that says, "How can I get my site listed on Ask.com?" Click on that link and follow the instructions for submitting your website.

    Optimizing Your Website

    • 5

Write content for your website that follows search engine optimization (SEO) fundamentals, which include writing and posting quality content and images, posting back links, creating good tags in your title code, not using javascript with site content, not using frames, not entering hidden or invisible text, and not duplicating text over and over. Ignoring these basic principles almost always results in poor search engine placement.

    • 6

Choose keywords and popular phrases that your target audience will enter as a search engine query. You can find ideas for keywords and phrases by searching the existing websites of competitors. Take detailed notes about the text and content posted on those sites, then develop similar keywords and phrases, and find your own, unique way to include them in your site's content.

    • 7

Create a news page on your affiliate website and update it daily with industry news, information or thoughts on your business and target market. Doing this will, over time, boost your site to the first page of search engine rankings. It also will turn your website into a resource for news and information about your industry, further establishing your company's credibility with its target market.

    • 8

Contact blog owners who write about your type of business, or who follow your industry. Ask them to look at your website and to place a link on their blog in exchange for you placing a link to their blog on your website. Reciprocal links like these go a long way to boosting your search engine ranking, and attracting visitors to your affiliate website.
