How to Convert Excel 2007 to 97/2003

Microsoft introduced new file formats for its suite of Office 2007 productivity applications. Included in the new file format, Microsoft Excel 2007 files saw a change from its predecessor with the XLSX format. To retain maximum compatibility with the older version of Microsoft Office, users may need to convert a file in the new format back to the original XLS format before they can use that file.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Excel spreadsheet you wish to convert in Microsoft Excel 2007.

    • 2

Click the Office button and click "Save As."

    • 3

Select "Excel 97-2003 Workbook" from the list.

    • 4

Name your file and click "Save."

Tips & Warnings

  • Users can opt to always save in the older format by clicking the Office button, clicking "Excel options," selecting the "Save" tab and switching to the "Excel 97-2003" format in the "Save in this file format" drop-down box.

  • You can also convert Excel documents online using a third-party conversion tool (see Resources). Browse for the Excel file you wish to convert, select the output format and enter the email address to which you want the converted document sent.
