Homemade Hookah

Hookahs, or water pipes, have been around for a long time. They are especially popular with Turkish and Middle Eastern cultures as a way of enjoying tobacco smoking. Hookahs typically have ornate craftsmanship that will be lacking on a simple homemade version, but a homemade hookah will still do the job. All you need are a few common supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic bottle
  • Garden hose
  • Plasticine
  • Drinking straw
  • Apple
  • Dig out the top of the apple, taking out the stem and most of the core. Hollow it to create the hookah bowl, only this will be a hookah apple-bowl.

  • Push and twist the bottom of the apple onto the end of a short piece of garden hose. A hose of about 9 inches suffices. Push the apple on, making sure the hose can "breathe" through the end of the apple.

  • Insert the opposite end of the hose into the plastic bottle with water in it. The hose should only go about 3/4 of the way into the bottle, meaning it won't touch the bottom. Seal the upper end of the hose to the mouth of the bottle with plasticine.

  • Tilt the bottle so the water is away from the sides. Use a small heat source (such as a match or cigarette) to burn a small hole into the lower side of the plastic bottle. Insert the straw and seal with plasticine. Your hookah is now ready for use.
